South Africa has a desperate need for funding and assistance with child care and development. Being passionate about empowerment and having grown up in South Africa, I found an alignment with the purpose and efforts of Nea Foundation

NEA FOUNDATION

NEA is a Swahili word for “purpose, to prepare the way, to set in motion, to be a starting block”.

NEA Foundation organically starts projects in South Africa within disadvantaged communities, focussing on places where the need as well as the potential for change is really big.

COMPLETED PROJECTS

Community creches. Tin and cardboard shacks are converted into day care centres for children in communities where children would otherwise not have been able to attend pre-school. They get balanced meals every day and they are in a safe and positive environment where they can play and learn!

Staff working at the pre-school are also from the community and NEA is in the process of training them to become teachers who can play a big role in the children’s development with care, love and nurturing.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Educational services to children of disadvantaged communities in South Africa are very scarce. Parents and their children queue all day long day after day at Home Affairs with no place for their children to obtain an education. Other areas also struggle without services (water and electricity) and it’s very difficult to build pre-schools in all these areas.

So many times in disadvantaged communities people hide children with disabilities and only when you get to know the community you start to know about these children. NEA would like to get involved with training communities about disabilities and help them to know about services and opportunities available to the children.

The staff from NEA has been in situations where children had to be taken to their own homes because there were no alternative places for them to go to, and this is only the children in our direct area. There is an immense need for such centres. For effective service delivery to address this reality, NEA will form partnerships with other organizations that share this vision.

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”
